Description

Atom Stacker Game

This is my entry for Thingiverse/Atomstack-challenge. It is a game-of-skill kind of game called Atom Stacker and can be played by one or more players.

The rules are simple

Stack as many atoms as possible on top of the stand.

There are two game modes:
1.) Competitive:
The players take turns. Whoever causes one or more atoms to fall down, loses.

2.) Collaborative:
Work together to build the biggest molecule possible. And if you run out of atoms: Just make some more! 😉 (by laser cutting and/or 3d printing)

Assembly


The atom's center disk and the stand walls can be 3d printed or laser cut out of 2mm material like wood. Since I don't own a laser cutter, I used a jigsaw, files, sandpaper and brown paint for some of the parts you can see on the photos. 2d vector svg files for cutting, engraving or die cutting can be found in SVGs.zip and everything_printer_cutter.zip.

Building the stand

The stand consists of a 3d printable bottom/top pieces and three walls. The walls can be 3d printed or laser-cut. There are three different wall models but you can use whichever you like best.

Building the atoms

There are three ways of making the atoms.

  1. Laser cut/engrave or 3d print the center disc. Then 3d print the atom's core + electrons and glue everything together. This is the most flexible method and will result in some really nice looking atoms. (You will need 12 electrons for a carbon atom, 14 electrons for a nitrogen atom and 16 electrons for an oxygen atom.)

  2. 3D-print two atom halves and glue them together afterwards.

  3. 3D-print the complete atoms. For this, no assembly is required. But supporting the models might be a little difficult.

There are three types off atoms. Oxygen, Nitrogen and Carbon which differ in size, core size and the number of electrons. Making a few of each brings some variety to the game and makes stacking more challenging. After playing many test rounds, I personally like the nitrogen ones best, though. ;-)
